When is the last time you spoke with your state Representative? Do you even know who they are? How can they represent us if they never speak to us?
In our Representative Republic, the Representative is the closest official to the people. They represent a district that is specifically based on the number of people. They are to be the peoples' advocate in government. How did we get so turned around? Most citizens don't know who their representative is, and their representative doesn't make any effort to connect with them. They seem to only answer to special interests and cronies when they are supposed to answer to the people.
Perhaps I'm old-fashioned. I just believe that if you're going to represent the people, you need to talk to them. I think we should have open government that welcomes the people to see what is being done on their behalf.
